Found Dead: Denim and Randy Sylvester Jr.

Scorched earth is all that remained Saturday in a hidden, wooded area in southeast Houston where the bodies of two missing children were found, KPRC Local 2 reported.

"It was like diving into the depths of hell and straight up dealing with the devil," Quanell X said.

The community activist was instrumental in getting Randy Sylvester Sr., who is the children's father and sole suspect, to reveal the location of the bodies of 3-year-old Denim and 7-year-old Randy Sylvester Jr.

After leading Pasadena police to two ponds, Sylvester led Quanell X to the final site off of Allendale Road near Old Galveston Road late Friday.

"Both children were partially incinerated," Capt. Bud Corbett said. "One (was) in what appeared to be remains of a wooden chest and the other (was) in a suitcase."

That unsettling discovery came after more than five days of searching for the missing children and after an incident where Sylvester threatened reporters, including a KPRC Local 2 crew.

Quanell X said he also noticed that Sylvester was combative at first. Despite that, he said he tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but that changed when Sylvester showed him what he called his "doghouse."

The so-called "doghouse" is a separate apartment in the same complex where Sylvester spent time away from his wife, but where the children often visited.

According to Quanell X the apartment was filthy and filled with pornography.

"At that moment, along with some other questions that detectives were asking, I knew in my heart that that brother was not innocent," Quanell X said.

After repeatedly pleading with the father Quanell X said Sylvester finally opened up Friday.

Instead of pointing investigators to the gruesome scene, Sylvester insisted that Quanell X join him and see it in person.

"I don't know how long I'll be disturbed about (that), possibly the rest of my life," Quanell X said, visibly shaken by the memory. "When we were walking it was like he wanted me to see it."

Those who searched for Randy Jr. and Denim, including Tim Miller with Texas Equusearch, said they knew there was a chance this would end with tragedy, but the children's fate was hard to accept.

"I don't believe it's all sunk in yet," Miller said. "I just think we're all in shock."

Quanell X would not say if Sylvester made a confession, but did share how he feels about Sylvester after this gut-wrenching experience.

"The closest I could get is just straight cold-blooded," Quanell X said.

Quanell X later told reporters that throughout the process, Sylvester showed very little remorse. He seemed more concerned with his own self-preservation than with the children.

The children's mother was not available for comment. Authorities said she had to be hospitalized after learning what happened to her children.

A prayer vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday for the children near where their bodies were found.

this just hurts me to my heart. i knew he did it when he said it was time to move on before randy, jr. and denim were found, but oh, my goodness, did he have to desecrate their little bodies that way?

they look so happy in their picture; randy, jr's big smile and bright eyes, and little denim- so sweet and innocent hugging her little bear. how could anyone look into those faces and hur them, especially their own parent?!?!?!

i sincerely hope there is a hell for randy, sr. to burn in for all eternity. he deserves that and then some.

r.i.p randy, jr and denim. you will be remembered, and missed.

That's really messed up, what kind of man kills children...a black man at that. I feel raelly bad for the mother, I pray that she's okay, but then how could you be?

My prayers go out to their mother! May God bless her though this difficult time and the days ahead.

What a sick and sad story!

It is so difficult to imagine murdering your children and then setting them on fire.

I hope that he receives the maximum sentence for this horrible crime!

This is just horrible. Why would someone do this? May those poor children rest in peace. This man will be locked up forever and deserves worse than that.

THAT'S A DAMN SHAME! He knew where those babies were the whole time....talking all that crazy ghetto crap about wanting to fight the reporters and stuff when he could have BEEN told someone where those babies were. He was more concerned about himself! Well Texas is a "Hang em' High" State so they will drop the hammer on him NO DOUBT I just hope some lawyer doesn't try to get him off on some BS insantiy plea. And if they can't find anyone to push the needle I will!!

I have two boys the same age as these two beautiful children and it kills me to know that someone, especially the child's parent, could so viciously murder a child and dispose of their bodies like trash. I never believed in the death penalty before I had children but with the rising number of cases such as this, I'm not so sure I agree with sparing scum of the earth like this. Throw him in with the general population in prison and they will take care of him. Better yet, throw him into a group of REAL parents armed with baseball bats and blowtorches and we will take care of him.

It is high time that society recognized the hopeless criminality of those who murder children. They are the incorrigable dregs of society and as such must go. They, who have interferred with the defenceless, have given up their right to walk and live amongst law abiding members of society; and gaol is too damn easy. Hang them HIGH.

I don't know how people can commit these heinous crimes, but to their own children is even more heartbreaking.

This is so haunting. Its disturbing and scary. With all that is clearly possible, how can we not live in fear? Not just for ourselves...but for our children.

Stories like this chill me to the bone. It's frightening that such evil exists in the world. To think of the horror those children must have gone through... There is no punishment to equal the crime -- at least not in this life.

This breaks my heart all the way down...how could anyone do that to their own flesh and blood? That's what I don't get. How do you look into your own child's eyes and then do them harm? I don't even HAVE any children and I can't wrap my mind around that.
